You're not on the lab network

Du bist nicht im Lab-Netz

This address leads to your workshop environment only inside the workshop Wi-Fi. You see this page because your device asked a DNS server outside the workshop network, and that one sent you to our public web server instead.

Quick way in: the IP address

Schnell hinein: über die IP-Adresse

In the workshop Wi-Fi your workspace also opens by its IP address. Enter the number or the port from your login card:

The browser warns about the certificate (it is issued for the name, not the IP): confirm it once. Everything works, apart from the Markdown preview in VS Code.

Make the name work

Den Namen zum Laufen bringen

  1. Join the workshop Wi-Fi

    Ins Workshop-WLAN

The Wi-Fi printed on your login card. The venue Wi-Fi or a phone hotspot won't do.

Das WLAN, das auf deiner Login-Karte steht. Das Konferenz-WLAN oder ein Handy-Hotspot reicht nicht.

  2. Turn off your VPN

    VPN ausschalten

Company VPN, WireGuard or OpenVPN, Tailscale or ZeroTier (exit node, MagicDNS), Mullvad, Proton, iCloud Private Relay: they all bring their own DNS.

Firmen-VPN, WireGuard oder OpenVPN, Tailscale oder ZeroTier (Exit-Node, MagicDNS), Mullvad, Proton, iCloud Private Relay: Sie alle bringen ihr eigenes DNS mit.

Need to keep it on? On Linux with systemd-resolved, send just this name to the Wi-Fi (interface name from resolvectl dns):

  3. Turn off secure DNS in the browser

    Secure DNS im Browser ausschalten

DNS over HTTPS skips the router. For the workshop, switch it off:

DNS über HTTPS geht am Router vorbei. Für den Workshop ausschalten:

    • Chrome, Brave, Vivaldi: chrome://settings/security → “Use secure DNS” off
    • Chrome, Brave, Vivaldi: chrome://settings/security → „Sicheres DNS verwenden“ aus
    • Edge: edge://settings/privacy → Security → “Use secure DNS” off
    • Edge: edge://settings/privacy → Sicherheit → „Sicheres DNS verwenden“ aus
    • Firefox: about:preferences#privacy → DNS over HTTPS → Off
    • Firefox: about:preferences#privacy → DNS über HTTPS → Aus
  4. Use the network's DNS on your device

    Das DNS des Netzes verwenden

A fixed resolver in the network settings (1.1.1.1, 8.8.8.8, 9.9.9.9, a Pi-hole at home), NextDNS, AdGuard or dnscrypt-proxy, Android's “Private DNS” with a hostname, a DNS profile on iOS: set it to automatic for this Wi-Fi, or pause it.

  5. Forget the old answer

    Die alte Antwort vergessen

Your device may still remember this server's address. Turning Wi-Fi off and on usually does it, otherwise:

    Windows

    ipconfig /flushdns

    macOS

sudo dscacheutil -flushcache; sudo killall -HUP mDNSResponder

    Linux

    resolvectl flush-caches

    Browser

    Browser

Chrome and Edge: chrome://net-internals/#dns → Clear host cache. Firefox: about:networking#dns → Clear DNS Cache.

Chrome und Edge: chrome://net-internals/#dns → Clear host cache. Firefox: about:networking#dns → Clear DNS Cache.

  6. Check

    Prüfen

In the workshop Wi-Fi the answer must be 192.168.8.10. A public address means one of the steps above is still in the way.

Why does this happen? Warum passiert das?

The name has a public DNS record that points to this web server; that is how we get a trusted certificate for it. In the workshop Wi-Fi the router answers with the workshop server's local address instead. VPNs, DNS over HTTPS and fixed resolvers never ask the router, so they get the public answer.
